Raising a child

Raising a child

Does your child show signs of emotional disregulation? This can help.

Is your child experiencing one of the following symptoms?

There are many different causes for emotional disregulation in childhood

Our childhood mind operates very differently from our adult mind especially the first 7 years. The neo cortex and pre frontal cortex (thinking, reasoning, logic and language) grow rapidly from birth but our brain will not fully develop until we are in our mid twenties. This means that we operate mainly on our limbic system (our emotional brain) in our formative years. Consequently we can misinterpret or not understand the messages we receive from the events we experience. When this happens we experience fear and insecurity. This leads to beliefs and subsequent behaviour  in order to try to feel safe. Experiences and events need not be big T traumas to have a negative effect on us. Experiences such as not feeling accepted by our peers, not being understood by parents and teachers or feeling anxious when separated from a parent are all traumas for our child brain. When we don’t understand and cannot express our feelings we act out in order to seek connection, security and love.

Top Tips to help your child

  1. Parent in an emotionally coaching style rather than an an emotionally dismissive way.
  2. Do not dismiss your child’s  feelings. Instead acknowledge and comfort.
  3. Discipline not punishment. Put in boundaries and maintain the boundaries with kind assertiveness .
  4. Attune to your child needs.
  5. Routine is a way to help your child feel secure. Especially a regular bedtime routine of bath, bed and book at around the same time every night.

How we can help your child

Recent research shows how we can not only help a child’s brain cognitively develop but also how we can influence that development.  The way we communicate with our children has a profound impact on how they develop, the opinion of themselves in this world, how they interact with others and how ultimately, what they learn in their in their early years, creates the adults they become.

Counselling young people:

  • Helps establish trust and understanding with a child.
  • Encourages the child to tell their story, in a confidential and safe environment.
  • Allows the young person to express him/herself, and to explore feelings and thoughts.
  • Enables the child to make informed choices.
  • Helps the young person develop a positive attitude.
  • Helps the young person develop and build confidence and self-esteem.

EFT / Emotional Freedom Technique

Kids run through emotions quickly and often have fears that an adult can’t understand and therefore cannot help children to deal with effectively.

The idea of being frightened of something living in the closet seems absurd to most adults, yet this is one of the most common fears of a child. Tapping is a easy and effective way to help children of all ages manage their feelings and fears.

  • Can significantly reduce exam and test nerves
  • Helps end childrens’ negative beliefs about themselves
  • Increases childrens’ confidence
  • Gets rid of phobias
  • Children often find EFT (tapping) sessions to be fun
  • For children who are living with chronic pain or chronic disease, EFT is very gentle and helpful.

NLP – Neuro Linguistic Programming

NLP will help children/teenagers understand their problems, transform them and move them on pass them.We all make maps inside our brain, how we use those maps to make sense of life and in turn communicate those maps with others, influences our behaviour. Using an NLP skill set, children can be taught how to change their maps, so they can gain confidence, or motivation, or overcome their fears. Properly taught, NLP is fast and profoundly powerful.

Children are great to work with in Hypnotherapy because their minds are more open to change and their imaginations are usually very active. Hypnotherapy can help many issues such as

  • Improved exam confidence
  • Improved memory/learning
  • Thumb sucking/nail biting
  • Bedwetting
  • Low self-esteem
  • Phobias
  • Dealing with stress or worry

Suffering from pregnancy related issues? This can help.

Are you experiencing one of the following symptoms?

There are many different causes for pregnancy related symptoms

There are a few common discomforts associated with pregnancy. Your centre of gravity changes as you grow through through your pregnancy putting additional stress on your shoulders, back, hips and abdominal muscles. Sciatic nerve pain is often commonly experienced by many women in late pregnancy as the uterus rests on muscles of the pelvic floor and lower back.

Ligaments relax and your pelvic joints become less stable, pulling your pelvis forward, resulting in lower back pain and sometimes pelvic instability, otherwise known as SPD.

Swelling is caused by your body holding more water than usual when you’re pregnant. Throughout the day the extra water tends to gather in the lowest parts of the body, especially if the weather is hot or you have been standing a lot. The pressure of your growing womb can also affect the blood flow in your legs. This can cause fluid to build up in your legs, ankles and feet.

Top Tips to keep healthy in pregnancy

  1. Avoid standing for long periods.
  2. Get enough rest, particularly later in pregnancy
  3. Eat well, avoid alcohol, drink plenty of water take regular walks.
  4. Book regular pregnancy treatments.

Worried it May Never Happen for You? Need to Know You Have Done Everything You Can? This can help.

Are you experiencing one of the following symptoms?

There are many different causes for unexplained infertility

The reproduction system is a finely balanced system much like the rest of your body; when are under pressure, feel anxiety or are concerned we produce hormones which counteract the reproductive hormones. When we are feeling pressure our pituitary and adrenal glands produce adrenaline and cortisol in preparation for fight or flight. If the pressure doesn’t pass within a short time we continue to produce these chemicals and long periods of these chemicals cause problems elsewhere in the body. In relation to fertility this alarm reaction engages both the hypothalamus and the pituitary glands which causes disruption with hormonal balancing required for the reproductive system.
When the subconscious detects a stressful situation it sets of the alarm system, the Hypothalamus reacts immediately by sending messages to the pituitary gland and the adrenal glands, these glands send the stress hormones to prepare the body for fight or flight (Sympathetic Nervous System), shutting down non critical functions including reproductive systems. On going stress (and production of stress hormones) disrupts the activity of progesterone, inhibit implantation of the fertilised egg and prevent ovulation thinning of the uterine wall lining. In addition, the chemical imbalances also serve to decrease the sex drive in both males and females.

The work that do we together will decrease the stress hormones which in turn allows the reproduction hormones to be produced restoring balance to the reproductive system.

Reproreflexology works in a subtle way on a physical and emotional level and is especially beneficial for those experiencing fertility issues. Reflexology can be particularly beneficial in the time leading up to egg collection and embryo transfer. Treatment sessions will encourage relaxation and alleviate anxiety, helping to reduce stress hormones, which may improve your chances of success. Around four to six sessions is recommended.
